Issued on 21 February 1983—eleven years after the original LP release and coinciding with the twentieth anniversary of The Beatles’ first Australian single—The Beatles Sight & Sound packaged The Essential Beatles LP with Barry Miles’ book The Beatles In Their Own Words (London: Omnibus Press, 1978) in an attractive cardboard flip-top box, retailing for $14.99. The LP was generally pressed with black Parlophone labels, although some early boxes contained existing Apple-labelled stock.
With renewed interest in The Beatles at the time, the package provided EMI (Australia) with a convenient means of moving existing stocks of both titles ahead of the release of The Number Ones in May 1983. It proved successful enough, however, to warrant a repressing. Ultimately, it was The Number Ones that brought the long life of The Essential Beatles to an end.
