Overview
By the early 1980s, The Beatles’ Star-Club recordings were finding new audiences through inexpensive repackagings. In Australia, Historic Sessions brought those performances into the television-marketing and non-specialist retail world of Telmak Teleproducts.

Established in 1980 by a consortium of regional television stations, Telmak sold records and other consumer products through television advertising. Former K-tel executive David Hammer led the business, with former EMI (Australia) manager Les Hodge as general manager. Although the company entered receivership in March 1982, its record releases continued.

Telmak issued Historic Sessions in August 1982, making it the second significant Australian release of the Star-Club performances. Licensed from New York’s Double H Licensing Corporation, the double album closely followed Audiofidelity Enterprises’ expanded British edition of 1981. The local package added interviews with John Lennon and Ringo Starr, together with photographs and inner-gatefold material supplied by Australian rock historian Glenn A. Baker.

The gatefold retained Chris White’s notes from Live! at the Star-Club in Hamburg, but added a postscript revising the account of the recording dates and the circumstances of Ringo’s appearance. Click the sleeve image above to view the inner gatefold.

Rather than remaining confined to specialist record shops, Historic Sessions became a familiar item in service stations and department stores. Its particular popularity on cassette helped carry The Beatles’ early Hamburg performances into an everyday Australian retail setting.
