Overview
Love Songs presented another way of revisiting The Beatles’ catalogue, this time through their romantic recordings. In Australia, however, much of the elaborate overseas packaging gave way to a simpler local edition.
The most conspicuous difference was Richard Avedon’s familiar cover photograph, which was printed in negative for reasons that remain unknown. EMI (Australia) also omitted the textured sleeve, booklet, special inner sleeves and picture labels. Unlike the preceding two albums, the local edition included no unique promotional insert. The inner gatefold artwork was retained and can be viewed by clicking the sleeve image above.
The resulting sleeve was particularly susceptible to heavy ringwear, making well-preserved copies less easy to find than the apparently straightforward packaging might suggest.
The two records were mastered in Australia from American production master tapes, filed as PARLO 468–469. They retained the overseas automatic-changer arrangement, with sides one and four on one record and sides two and three on the other.
The album spent eleven weeks on the Australian charts, reaching No. 59.
