Overview
The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl brought a live Beatles album into the Australian EMI catalogue in 1977. Its local production followed what had become a familiar arrangement: EMI (Australia) received tapes from both Britain and the United States, then selected one set for mastering. In this case it used the EMI UK tapes, although both sets were stored under the same library numbers, PARLO 454–455.

The Australian edition retained the gatefold presentation and picture labels similar to those used in Europe. It also included a locally adapted, double-sided single-sheet insert promoting The Beatles’ LP catalogue, replacing the printed inner sleeve supplied with the British edition. Click the sleeve image above to view the inner gatefold, and visit the Insert page for the accompanying catalogue sheet.

The album spent twelve weeks on the charts, reaching No. 12. Its next significant local incarnation arrived in January 1990, when EMI (Australia) reissued it on LP and cassette through its budget Axis Records label. The paperwork had been originated approximately eighteen months earlier, but no documented explanation for the delay has emerged. Anecdotal evidence suggests that EMI (Australia) had considered a CD release and had been refused permission.

For the Axis edition, the album was recut and the gatefold replaced by a single sleeve. The original design was largely shifted down to accommodate a grey Axis banner, and the printing had a slightly cooler hue. The Axis label page illustrates the revised sleeve.

A small naming peculiarity links the original release and its budget successor. Local copy text omitted “the” before “Hollywood Bowl”, producing The Beatles at Hollywood Bowl. That wording appears on the original LP’s spine, on all cassette editions and on the Axis reissue labels.
