Released in the UK in October 1980, the passing of John Lennon in December caused such high local demand for this album that copies were initially imported from the UK. It would not be until April 1981 before the album would be manufactured locally. By October 1981, thanks largely to aggressive TV marketing by EMI (Australia), the album had spent seven weeks at the top of the charts and had sold over 200,000 copies, making it one of EMI's strongest performers for the year. It would ultimately spend 26 weeks in the charts.

The Beatles Ballads came with an album-sized insert promoting the Beatles LP back-catalogue.

Mastered at Studios 301 by Otto Ruiter utilising the Maxicut Process. Subsequently mastered by Don Bartley.
